Strawberry quartz is a variety of quartz whose warm pink-to-red glow comes from fine needle-like inclusions of iron minerals such as hematite, goethite, or lepidocrocite suspended inside otherwise clear crystal — the same inclusion effect that produces golden rutilated quartz, only in a rosy key. Like all quartz it sits at about 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it durable enough for everyday beads, and most material on the market comes from Brazil, Madagascar, Mexico, and Kazakhstan. It is not the same stone as rose quartz: rose quartz is colored throughout by trace elements and looks milky and even, while strawberry quartz shows visible flecks and shimmer when held to the light.
