Turquoise

Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminium phosphate mineral, and it is the copper in its chemistry that gives the stone its famous sky-blue to blue-green colour — the more iron present, the greener it runs. Its English name comes from the Old French pierre turquoise, or 'Turkish stone', because the earliest Persian turquoise reached Europe through Turkish trade routes; it is also the traditional birthstone for December.
