Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony — a microcrystalline form of quartz — named after the Achates river in Sicily, where Greek writers recorded finding it more than two thousand years ago. It rates about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is why agate beads wear well as everyday jewelry, and it occurs in many natural colors: warm red agate and carnelian, deep black agate, soft lavender agate, and the prized Nanhong or 'southern red' agate from Yunnan and Sichuan. In Chinese tradition agate is counted among the Seven Treasures of Buddhism and is traditionally believed to steady the emotions, restore vitality, and invite harmony at home and at work.
