Fu Character (福) Meaning: Symbolism, Traditions & How to Wear Fu Jewelry

Walk through any Chinatown at Lunar New Year and you will see it everywhere: a single red-and-gold character pasted on doors, windows and gift envelopes. That character is 福 (fú), one of the most beloved symbols in Chinese culture. It appears on jewelry too, from silver bracelets to carved cinnabar pendants. So what does it actually mean, and how can you wear it with intention?

This guide explains the meaning of the Fu character, the traditions behind it, and how to choose a piece that suits you.

What Does the Fu (福) Character Mean?

福 is usually translated as "blessing," "good fortune," or "happiness." Unlike a word that points only to money or luck, fú is broad. It covers health, harmony at home, peace of mind and good circumstances in general.

The character is made up of two parts. The left side is traditionally associated with ritual or offerings, and the right side with abundance or a full cup. Etymologists describe the combined meaning as something like "receiving abundance through blessing," though interpretations of the old forms vary.

Why Is Fu Hung Upside Down?

This is the question people ask most. During Lunar New Year, many households hang the 福 character upside down on their front door. The reason is a pun. In Mandarin, 倒 (dào, "upside down") sounds just like 到 (dào, "to arrive"). An upside-down 福 therefore reads as "fortune has arrived."

Note that this custom applies to wall and door decorations. On jewelry, the character is almost always shown upright, which is the more traditional way to wear a blessing close to you.

The Five Blessings (五福)

Fu is also tied to an old idea called the Five Blessings, mentioned in the classical text Shangshu (Book of Documents). They are commonly listed as:

  • Longevity: a long life.
  • Wealth: comfortable resources.
  • Health and peace: physical and emotional well-being.
  • Love of virtue: a kind, principled character.
  • A peaceful end: living out one's years naturally.

Because the word for bat (蝠, fú) sounds like 福, bats also appear in traditional art. Five bats together represent the Five Blessings. You may spot them on antique porcelain and textiles.

Fu, Lu, Shou: The Three Star Gods

You may also see Fu paired with Lu (祿), meaning prosperity or status, and Shou (壽), meaning longevity. Together they form the "three stars" of fortune, often shown as a trio of figures in feng shui decor. In that tradition, Fu stands for happiness and family blessings.

How to Wear a Fu Piece

  • As a daily reminder: choose a bracelet or small pendant you can wear every day.
  • For Lunar New Year: red is the traditional color of celebration, so a red cord or cinnabar piece suits the season.
  • As a gift: a Fu piece is a thoughtful way to say "I wish you well" for birthdays, graduations, new homes and new jobs.
  • Layered with other symbols: Fu combines nicely with dragon motifs (see our Dragon Series) for a look that speaks of both blessing and strength.

Wearing a Fu piece on either wrist is fine. Many people simply choose the side that feels comfortable. For more ideas, browse our women's bracelets.

A Note on Meaning and Belief

A Fu character is a cultural symbol and a heartfelt wish, not a guarantee of any outcome. In feng shui and folk tradition, it is said to invite blessings and positive energy, but its real value is often personal: a small, beautiful reminder to welcome good things and be grateful for them.
